Because I’m tired of NBC making me wait for the renewals annunciations, pissed at Glee, disappointed of Community and mad at Grey’s Anatomy; I’m gonna have a Cougar Town marathon
At least this TV Show is flawless plus the soundtrack is to die for
What do six cable comedies, two dramedies, and a British series have in common?—Fantastically Funny Female leads. All ten of these sharp, hilarious series are anchored by ladies who’ve covered the spectrum in terms of characters from cougar to vice president, from cancer patient to drug addicted nurse. Of these ten series—with the exceptions of Cougar Town, Parks and Recreation, and Veep—most were created by women. Girls, Miranda, The Mindy Project, and Web Therapy have their creators, also serve as their stars. And in some cases, like Lena Dunham’s and Courteney Cox’s, they also direct. Two have won Emmys for their acting—Edie Falco for Jackie and Julia Louis Dreyfus for Veep— while Lena Dunham and Laura Linney have taken home Golden Globes. In a world where Seinfeld, Fraiser, Raymond were once male leads, women are dominating.
And what do these femme lead series say about women in television, particularly comedy? Well, there’s no longer a need to ask the question: “Can women be funny?” Women are funny. That’s not only proven by the fact that they carry their own shows. Nor is it only proven by the brilliance behind their comic abilities both acted and written. It’s because these shows represent the change in the characterization of women that are portrayed through the medium of comedy. Women are now strong, independent, at times flawed anti-heroes, that give TV viewers someone to root for. Because let’s face it, bitch is still the new black.
